Chad Huffman

  • Chad Huffman was selected in the second round by the San Diego Padres of the 2006 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
  • In Spring 2010, Huffman was claimed off of waivers by the New York Yankees and made his Major League Baseball debut on June 13, 2010. The former TCU standout collected a base hit in his first big league at-bat against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium.
  • Currently, Huffman plays for the Cleveland Indians.
  • A three-time Minor League All-Star, Huffman captured the 2009 AAA Home Run Derby title.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Under Schlossnagle, the Frogs have seen 34 players drafted by 19 different teams over the last seven years.
  • In 2005, Lance Broadway became the highest draft pick in TCU baseball history when the Chicago White Sox selected him with the 15th overall pick. In the last 10 years, Broadway was the fourth-highest draft pick of any sport at TCU. Andrew Cashner became the second pitcher under Schlossnagle to be drafted in the first round, going 19th overall to the Chicago Cubs in 2008.
  • In 2006, the Horned Frogs were one of just three schools to have two players selected in the first 54 picks of the draft.
  • In 2007, the Frogs saw four players drafted on day one, again putting them in elite company as only two other schools accomplished that same feat. Overall with seven picks in 2007, the Frogs were one of just 24 schools with that many players drafted.
  • Lance Broadway made his Major League Baseball debut in 2007 for the Chicago White Sox, which made him the first player during Schlossnagle’s tenure to reach the big leagues.
  • Eugene Espineli made his Major League debut in 2008. Four more joined the big leagues in 2010 as Andrew Cashner (Cubs), Sam Demel (Arizona), Chad Huffman (Yankees) and Jake Arrieta (Baltimore) all made their debuts in the summer.
  • In 2011, the Horned Frogs had a school-record eight players drafted.
  • TCU currently has 17 players in professional baseball, seven of which are currently on a Major League roster.
  • In the summer of 2006, Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle was named an assistant on the National Collegiate team. In addition, Jake Arrieta was part of the 22-man squad.
  • The duo was part of one of the best team’s ever fielded by USA Baseball as they won the FISU World Championships in Cuba. It was the first-ever championship won by Team USA on Cuban soil. The team posted a 28-2-1 record (.919 win percentage), the best-ever in Team USA history. Arrieta was 4-0 with a 0.27 ERA in six appearances with the National Team.
  • TCU also made a name for itself at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Both Arrieta and Espineli were named to the initial 20-man squad. Espineli was promoted to the big leagues and didn’t travel to Beijing, but Arrieta won his lone start in China as Team USA won the bronze medal.
  • Espineli did star on the international level as he was part of the 2009 USA World Cup team that won a gold medal. TCU head baseball trainer Danny Wheat served as an assistant trainer on the squad.
  • The summer of 2010 saw Kyle Winkler earn a roster spot with Team USA, while head baseball athletic trainer Danny Wheat served in a similar capacity.
  • Andrew Mitchell and Josh Elander joined the growing list of Horned Frogs to earn a spot with the Collegiate National Team. Both were members of Team USA’s 2011 squad, marking the first time in program history that two Horned Frogs were on the team.

  • Scott Atchison was selected in the 49th round by the Seattle Mariners in the 1998 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
  • The former TCU hurler made his Major League Baseball debut on July 31, 2004, with the Mariners. After two seasons in Seattle, Atchison played a single season with the San Francisco Giants.
  • Atchison spent three seasons playing professionally in Japan.
  • Atchison made the 2010 Opening Day roster for the Boston Red Sox where he pitched out of the bullpen.

  • Jake Arrieta was selected in the fifth round by the Baltimore Orioles during the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
  • The former TCU standout made his Major League Baseball debut on June 10, 2010, where he defeated the New York Yankees after holding the Bronx Bombers to three runs over six innings of action.
  • One of the top young pitchers in the Orioles’ organization, Arrieta was a member of the 2008 USA Olympic Team. Arrieta was selected as the 2008 Carolina League Pitcher of the Year and played in the 2008 Future’s Game.

  • Lance Broadway was selected with the 15th overall pick in the first round by the Chicago White Sox during the 2005 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
  • Broadway was the highest drafted player in TCU history.
  • The former TCU hurler made his big league debut on September 7, 2007, against the Kansas City Royals where he pitched six shutout innings en route to earning his first career victory.
  • Broadway was traded to the New York Mets in the Summer of 2009 before signing with the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2009 winter.

  • Andrew Cashner was selected with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Chicago Cubs.
  • The former TCU hurler became the second-highest player in program history to be drafted in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Cashner quickly rose through the Chicago Cubs’ organization as he was named an AFL Rising Star during the 2009 season.
  • Cashner made his Major League Baseball debut on May 31, 2010, against the Pittsburgh Pirates and collected his first career victory on July 20, 2010, against the Houston Astros.
  • Cashner was traded to the San Diego Padres in the fall of 2011.

Sam Demel was selected in the third round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics.

  • Sam Demel was selected in the third round by the Oakland A’s during the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.
  • Demel made his Major League Baseball debut on June 16, 2010, against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The former TCU standout was traded from the A’s to the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 15, 2010.
  • Demel posted his first big league victory on August 9, 2010, against the Milwaukee Brewers then followed that performance up with his first career save on August 10.

  • Matt Carpenter was drafted in the 14th round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
  • He was named the Cardinals’ Minor League Player of the Year in 2010.
  • Carpenter made his professional debut on June 4, 2011 with the eventual World Champion St. Louis Cardinals.
